Renowned Ugandan musician Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu aka Bobi wine began his mandate as a legislator after taking oath as a member of parliament for Kyadondo East constituency.
Kyagulanyi swore to be faithful and bear true allegiance to the Republic of Uganda. He also swore to give faithful service to Parliament, to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution as by law established.
The Rt. Hon. Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga, welcomed the legislator and urged him to serve all Ugandans equally.
‘I would like to hand you the instruments of office; the Constitution and the Rules of Procedure. Study and master them as they will guide you in the plenary and committees,’ she said.
The 35-year-old artiste won the election held on June 29 where he contested as an independent candidate by 25,659 votes, beating his challengers Sitenda Sebalu and Apollo Kantinti with a margin of more than 20,000 votes. The seat fell vacant after court nullified Apollo Kantinti’s 2016 election citing irregularities in the process.
“I have come to parliament at a very senstive time, a time where there is an impeding bill to lift the age limit for the presidency. I have just taken an oath to defend, preserve the constitution of Uganda and that will be my main goal right now,”Kyagulanyi said soon after being sworn into the 10th Parliament.
He was responding to questions related to press reports that government is proposing a change in the age limit for the presidency.
