Manchester City come from 2-1 down in injury-time to end their 44-year wait for the tag of ‘English champions’ on Sunday. Roberto Mancini hailed the “incredible” nature of Manchester City’s Premier League title triumph of the dramatic 3-2 win over ten-man QPR at The Etihad Stadium. Needing a victory to finish top of the table, City

were behind as the clock ticked past 90 minutes – only for Edin Dzeko and Sergio Aguero to score decisive goals, the latter coming in the 94th minute.

City’s late, late show took the title out of the hands of Manchester United, who won 1-0 at Sunderland thanks to a Wayne Rooney goal.

Ferguson Quotes:

“Everybody expected Manchester City to win, but they did it against ten men for half an hour and with five extra minutes to help them. But I congratulate Manchester City on winning the league. Anybody who wins it deserves it, because it’s a long haul.” ~ Sir Alexander Ferguson

‎”It’s a cruel way to lose out but I have experienced many ups and downs in 26 years. I think we have a rich history, better than anyone and it will take them a century to get to our level of history. For us it’s still a challenge; we’re good at challenges and we’ll kick on from here ” -Sir Alex Ferguson

After the most phenomenal climax to a Premier League season, there was cause for double celebration at the Etihad Stadium as City lifted their first top-flight title since 1968, while QPR survived relegation courtesy of Bolton’s draw at Stoke. The Champions League places go to Arsenal and Tottenham, for now at least in the case of Spurs, after what was a compelling final day of Premier League action.

And Mancini, who also won the FA Cup last season, admitted he could hardly believe what he was seeing from the touchline.

“To win it like this is incredible,” Mancini told Sky Sports. “I have never seen a final day like this. We never deserved to lose this game, we had a lot of shots. They had only one shot at goal and they scored two goals.

“Five minutes from the end, I didn’t think we’d win this game. We deserved this championship. It is fantastic for our players, our supporters after 44 years.

“I think for us it was really important to start winning this championship, Manchester City can have a big future now.”

Five moments that won City the title

October 23: (Manchester United 1 Manchester City 6): In the meeting of the two early-season title rivals City ran riot to inflict United their heaviest home defeat since February 1955.

March 21: (Manchester City 2 Chelsea 1): Carlos Tevez had not played for City since his spectacular falling-out with Roberto Mancini during the Champions League but the South American striker rose from the bench to help inspire a stirring City fightback after Chelsea had taken the lead through Gary Cahill.

April 30: (Manchester City 1 Manchester United 0): City had been presented with the opportunity to haul themselves back into the title race after United’s shock 4-4 draw with Everton a week earlier. An attritional battle was settled on the stroke of half-time when captain Vincent Kompany rose high to nod home a Silva corner.

May 6: (Newcastle United 0 Manchester City 2): Despite being frustrated for long periods, City held their nerve to claim a clinical victory with two goals from midfielder Yaya Toure taking them to within 90 minutes of the title.

May 13: (Manchester City 3 QPR 2): With just four minutes of second-half stoppage time remaining, City came back from the dead as Edin Dzeko and Sergio Aguero came to life in the added-on time to help Mancini’s side create history.

CRANES coach Bobby Williamson cannot hide his impression of Ugandan Bryan Massa, who turns out for Vasalund IF in the Swedish Division One league.

The Scot, who returns to Kampala from assessing Martin Mutumba and Massa, is impressed with both players and has given FUFA the go-ahead to secure a Ugandan passport for Massa.

Williamson returns just in time to summon the squad for the 2014 World Cup qualifier against Senegal next month and the return leg of 2013 Nations Cup qualifier against Congo. Uganda lost the first leg 3-1 away in Brazaville in February.

Williamson went to Sweden last week to watch the two players and report to the football federation his assessment as far as the national team is concerned. FUFA publicist Roger Mulindwa said at the weekly press conference that they would lodge an application Massa’s passport.

Coach (Williamson) has sent me an e-mail and he is very impressed with Massa. In fact he has told me to go ahead and process a passport for him to make sure he is available in the game against Senegal, Mulindwa said.

Massa is a 20-year old fleet-footed player, who by his own revelation, started playing football at the age of five.

Although his fast pace and good crosses from either flank make him stand out, Massa also loves to play in the lead striker’s role. He was the top scorer in Sweden Division One league with 18 goals last year.

I think the best position for me is the wing, because then i can use my technical ability, my speed and my good crosses, Massa said on his blog.

MADRID – Real Madrid claimed their first Spanish title in four years ending the reign of bitter rivals Barcelona to boot as they beat Athletic Bilbao 3-0 on Wednesday for what is their 32nd league crown.

Gonzalo Higuain, Mesut Ozil and Cristiano Ronaldo scored the goals to give Jose Mourinho a record-breaking four titles in four different countries and the victory required with two games remaining.

Mourinho’s first Spanish league title ended Barca’s run of three successive league titles in his second season at the club.

Madrid needed to win after Barcelona had earlier beat Malaga 4-1 with goals from Carles Puyol and a hat-trick from Lionel Messi that saw him break Gerd Mueller’s record for goals in a single European season.

Madrid started at a great pace and Higuain and Fabio Coentrao both went close within the first two minutes.

Markel Susaeta then tested Iker Casillas in the Madrid goal with a header before Madrid were awarded a penalty on 11 minutes for a clear handball by Javi Martinez.

However, Ronaldo shot straight down the centre which was easily saved by Gorka Iraizoz – it was his second penalty miss in a week after last Wednesday’s Champions League shoot-out against Bayern Munich.

The Portuguese star need not have worried, five minutes later ’los blancos’ were ahead when Higuain hit an unstoppable shot from 20 yards.

At the other end Athletic did not have as much luck when the referee turned down claims for what looked to be another clear handball, this time by Sami Khedira.

The title then became a virtual certainty on 20 minutes when Ronaldo found Ozil with a sweeping cross from the right-wing for the German midfielder to double the lead.

The home side kept up an aerial bombardment of Madrid’s defence throughout.

Inigo Perez provoked a great save from Casillas before Mikel San Jose followed-up only to strike the bar on the stroke of half-time.

Five minutes after the interval Ronaldo headed home a corner to add the third and his 44th league goal of the season.

Athletic continued to look for a consolation roared on by a partisan home crowd, but they were reduced to 10 men on 73 minutes when Martinez was sent-off for a second yellow card after another handball.

Barca coach Pep Guardiola had earlier named a strong side as the Catalans attempted to delay Madrid’s celebrations as long as possible.

A defeat against fourth placed Malaga would have handed the title to Madrid without them kicking a ball, but Barca ran out convincing winners over fourth placed Malaga.

Messi’s hat-trick inspired the win and takes his total tally to 68, one better than that mustered by Mueller while playing for Bayern Munich in the 1972-73 season. Also on Wednesday Valencia won 4-0 at home to Osasuna, for whom Dejan Lekic was sent-off before half-time, with a double each from Aritz Aduriz and Jonas Goncalves to edge closer to sealing third position and a Champions League place.

The win leaves Valencia three points clear of Malaga and six ahead of city rivals Levante.

Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola announced yesterday he is leaving the team at the end of the season, ending a four-year reign over one of the greatest eras in club football.

“This is not a very easy situation for me,” the 41-year-old Guardiola told a news conference where it was also revealed that his assistant coach Tito Vilanova will take over.

“Four years is an eternity as coach of Barca,” said Guardiola.

“Time wears everything down, I feel drained and I need to replenish.”

Guardiola apologised for leaving the club in uncertainty for such a long period while he considered whether to extend his one-year contract, which expires in June.

But the coach said he wanted to wait until the Champions League and the Liga title were settled before making an announcement.

Barcelona crashed out of Europe’s premier club competition after a semi-final defeat to Chelsea on Tuesday, and Guardiola has already conceded the Spanish league title to arch rivals Real Madrid.

“The man who is succeeding me will be able to bring something more,” he said, standing up to hug club president Sandro Rosell at the podium after his statement.

He added that he would coach again but not immediately.

“I cannot replenish if I coach again immediately, I don’t want to,” he said.

“I am leaving at peace with myself, with the feeling of a job well done – and I say that after losing two titles.”

After spending most of his playing career at Barca, Guardiola coached Barcelona’s B team before taking control of the first-team squad in June 2008 from Frank Rijkaard.

In his four years at the helm, he has led Barcelona to 13 titles and is credited with promoting some of the most sublime football in the world, helped by huge talent including Lionel Messi.

His successor Vilanova hit world headlines last summer when Jose Mourinho, coach of Real Madrid, poked him in the eye during a brawl on the sidelines of Barcelona’s Supercup victory at the Nou Camp.

Asked about the incident, which earned him a two-match ban, Mourinho famously asked journalists at a post-match news conference: “Pito Vilanova?

“I don’t know who this Pito Vilanova is.”

Amazingly, Chelsea and Bayern have only met once before in the Champions League and that was in the quarter-final in 2004/05 which Chelsea won 6-5 on aggregate.

Bayern v English Sides
Bayern have already faced Premier League opposition this season, coming up against Manchester City in the group stage when each side recorded a 2-0 home win. Overall the German club have played 35 matches against English sides, winning 13, drawing 12 and losing ten with 51 goals scored and 43 against. They have lost only once in Munich in 16 matches, including ten victories – 2-1 versus Norwich City in the 1993/94 UEFA Cup second round – and have won four out of the last five contests in Germany.

Chelsea v German Sides
The Blues went down 2-1 at Bayern Leverkusen on matchday five having won 2-0 against the same opponents in London in the opening round of group games. Of their 13 previous fixtures against Bundesliga sides they have won seven and lost four, all those defeats coming in Germany – indeed they have won only one of their six visits, 1-0 at Stuttgart in the 2003/04 Champions League round of 16.

Final Omens
Chelsea did, however, emerge victorious in their only UEFA final against German opponents, Gianfranco Zola scoring the only goal of the 1997/98 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup showpiece against Stuttgart in Solna.

For Bayern, the omens are less positive; three of their previous European Cup finals have brought them into opposition with English clubs and all but the first – a 2-0 defeat of Leeds United in 1974/75 – ended in disappointment.

Aston Villa FC were 1-0 victors in Rotterdam seven years later, before Bayern famously lost the 1999 UEFA Champions League final to Manchester United in Barcelona. They were edged out by Liverpool in the 2001 UEFA Super Cup, going down 3-2 in Monaco – they will hope things turn in their favour at the Fußball Arena München on 19 May.

Champions League Final
19 May: Champions League Final

Meanwhile the international players’ union have issued a plea for clemency by Uefa for six Chelsea and Bayern Munich players suspended for the Champions League final.

FIFPro says there is an argument to allow the players, three from each club, who all picked up yellow cards in the semi-finals, to be allowed to play.

The players’ union points out that Uefa will adopt Fifa’s policy for Euro 2012 where existing yellow cards are waived after the quarter-finals.

The Chelsea players are Branislav Ivanovic, Ramires and Raul Meireles, with Bayern’s Luiz Gustavo, David Alaba and Holger Badstuber also due to miss out.

The FIFPro spokesman Simon Barker said: “Anybody committing a serious offence in the semi-final should be awarded a red card and miss the final. But the offences that result in a yellow card do not justify the serious punishment of missing the match of your life.

Former Liberian President Charles Taylor was found guilty of war crimes on Thursday for the role he played in Sierra Leone’s bloody civil war. The verdict was welcomed by human rights groups and crowds in Freetown. The UN-backed special court is expected to sentence him late next month.

Liberia’s former President Charles Taylor was found guilty of war crimes and crimes against humanity Thursday by a UN-backed special tribunal in The Hague. Taylor, 64, faces a possible sentence of life in prison for his role in the atrocities committed during Sierra Leone’s decade-long civil war.

Taylor was found guilty on 11 counts, including murder, conscription of child soldiers, rape and sexual slavery. He was tried before a Special Court for Sierra Leone for supplying weapons to the brutal rebel group Revolutionary United Front (RUF) during Sierra Leone’s bloody civil war, which ended in 2001. In return, the rebels reportedly supplied him with raw diamonds.

In her summation of the case, Prosecutor Brenda Hollis argued that Taylor was directly responsible for the horrors in Sierra Leone. She built the case that, with Taylor’s approval, the RUF terrorized villagers in Sierra Leone, cutting the limbs off of countless victims, forcing young girls into sexual slavery, and turning children and teenagers, with the help of drugs, into violent soldiers. More than 100,000 people are believed to have died during the conflict.

“The accused is criminally responsible … for aiding and abetting in the crimes,” Presiding Judge Richard Lussick said as he read out the court’s decision.

Taylor’s attorney, Courtenay Griffiths, told reporters after the verdict was announced that the case based on “tainted and corrupt evidence.”

‘Sending a Message’

Taylor is the first former African head of state to be tried before an international court. He was arrested in 2006 after seeking refuge in Nigeria, and the trial began in June 2007 in The Hague. Taylor pled not guilty to all of the charges. Closing arguments in the case took place in February and March 2011, and the judges for the special court spent the past year studying 50,000 pages of witness testimony against Taylor, along with 1,520 pieces of evidence.

The ruling was welcomed by the non-profit organization Human Rights Watch. “Powerful leaders like Charles Taylor have for too long lived comfortably above the law,” Elise Keppler, senior international justice counsel at the organization, said in a statement. “Taylor’s conviction sends a message to those in power that they can be held to account for grave crimes.”

In Sierra Leone, thousands of people watched the verdict being delivered in The Hague at special viewing sites set up by officials. As the conviction was being read, crowds of people gathered in the Sierra Leone capital of Freetown sighed with relief, the Associated Press reported.

The news agency also reported that at the beginning of the hearing Thursday, Taylor appeared relaxed, waving at some people sitting in the public gallery. Then, as the judgment was read and appeared to be going against him, Taylor sat tensely with is hands clasped in front of him.

A sentencing in the case is expected at the end of May.
